Your instrument will become dirty because of sweat and dust merely just by playing it. Utilizing a soft cloth is the best way to clean it. Certain clothes made from special quality are available in music stores, or you can simply use an old 100% cotton shirt. It is essential however that if the shirt has a logo in it, you will have to remove it first since this can cause damage by scratching the surface of your guitar. If the surface of your guitar is French polished or lacquered, then you must avoid cleaning items such as paper towels at all times because these will also cause scratches. If you think that it is needed to clean your guitar with paper towels, and then just buy non-woven shop towels which are available on a roll. This can cost a little, but they will not scratch your guitar. You will sometimes find that dust accumulates under the strings. Therefore, you should pay attention to this part of your instrument. Do not hesitate to insert a cloth behind the strings and give it a good rub. If you pay good attention to cleaning the strings of your guitar, then their life will be extended. In addition to a normal cleaning routine, it is also advised that every after playing with your instrument, you have to wipe your strings by holding them firmly through a cloth and rubbing it up and down their length. This will remove any dust, grease from your fingers, skin cells, perspiration build-up and many more. If you find it hard to remove the fingerprints from your guitar, then you can blow a gentle breath, just like what you do with your eye glasses in order to create a little moisture. You will find that by rubbing your guitar briskly, finger prints will then be removed. It is also advisable to use a slightly moistened soft cloth and a minimum amount of mild detergent. But, remember not to overdo it. Avoid getting moisture into the small spaces on the guitar surface. In addition, you need to rub it well afterwards with a soft dry cloth. Changing these clothes on a regular basis is strongly recommended to avoid rubbing the dirt from an old cloth back on to the guitar. If your instrument has a sticky residue from stickers or tape, you will need to remove it using mineral spirits. You can also use a lighter fluid, which is otherwise known as naphtha. Neither of these products will cause your instrument any harm. But, you will need to remove the solvent with a damp cloth to polish your guitar clean after removing the stickers or tape. Ensure that you are careful when cleaning sticky residue off your guitar, as you do not want to spread it around the rest of your instrument.
